Steam rooms: what are the health benefits?

There are plenty of benefits to steam rooms, and millions of people improve their health and wellbeing every year with steam therapy.

You’ll typically find steam rooms in gyms and spas, but people are increasingly starting to install them at home. Thanks to Vi-Spa’s experts, you can now enjoy the benefits of steam rooms at home.

The latest models come with features such as aromatherapy, coloured lighting and digital radio, so they really are the last word in luxury.

But what’s all the fuss about, health-wise? Well, sit in a steam room and you induce hyperthermia. This is where your body temperature rises over 37.2°C – a bit like having a fever. This can kill or stunt viruses within your body, as they can survive only in a narrow band of temperature.

When you start to sweat, you begin to rid your body of the toxins that have built up inside you. In a typical session, you’ll lose one-third of these toxins. With research showing that many cancers result from poor diet and industrial toxins, you can see how a steam room can benefit your health.

The steam room will also raise your heart rate and increase blood flow to the capillaries. This is great for your skin as it receives more oxygen and vitamins.

Allergy sufferers will also benefit from using a steam room. Inhaling hot, moist air opens up your airways, which reduces respiratory resistance.

Add essential oils to the steam water and you can also reduce bacterial growth while at the same time relieving sinus congestion.

But we shouldn’t overlook the overall benefit of steam rooms: the reduction in stress. The heat results in relaxation of the muscles, which allows blood vessels to soften and expand.

Your blood then floods the muscles with nutrients and new oxygen, which induces a sense of relaxation in your mind and body. And what could be better than that?
